Keeping Your Dog Cool This Summer
Should I shave my dog?
Shaving a dog down for summer is a very common request by owners, however it isn’t suitable for all breeds. The type of coat your dog has will determine if you should shave or not.
There are 2 types of coats:
- Single Coated: Shih Tzu, Maltese, Poodles, Bichon etc
- Double Coated: Huskies, Samoyeds, Border Collies, Golden Retrievers etc
Single coated breeds have coats like human hair that has no determined growth. This means it will continue to grow until it is cut. Whilst single coat breeds can be shaved, shaving a double coat breed is not recommended.
REASONS NOT TO SHAVE DOUBLE COATED BREEDS:
- It will not keep them cooler in summer
- It will permanently damage their coat
- Increases the risk of sunburn & Skin cancer
- It will not decrease their shedding
- It will not help with your allergies
How To Keep Them Cool
Single Coat Breeds: Can be shaved and will commonly grow back the same as before.
Double Coated Breeds: It’s a coat made up of two layers of fur. The first layer is fine and fluffy close to the skin. This is fur that sheds; light and soft. An easy way to refer to this layer of coat is very similar to the insulation used in homes. This layer is excellent at trapping air and insulating the dog. It keeps your dog cool in summer and warm in winter. The second layer is the top coat made of guard hairs that don’t shed as often and protect the coat from the sun and bug bites. It also insulates against the heat as well. It’s misleading to think that shaving your double coated dog for summer will help keep your pet cool. Evolution has provided them with exactly what they need to survive. By stripping them of their natural ability to protect themselves can cause on-going harm to your dog’s health. When the coat does grow back, the top coat will be shorter or sometimes not grow back at all. The undercoat will be thicker and denser. The older the dog, the less likely the quality of the coat will be as before. So to decide on what your dog’s needs we suggest a full clipping package for single coated dogs. For double coated dogs we suggest a deshedding package if they are carrying a lot of loose hair, allowing the undercoat to work at its best to balance the insulation your dog needs.
